Assessing dangerous climate change impacts on Australias wheat industry
نویسنده
چکیده
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and global and regional climates are already changing as a result of human activities. More change seems likely. Historical climate variations, particularly in rainfall, have had significant impacts on the Australian cropping industries and consequently we would anticipate additional impacts from future climate change. However, the magnitude of these changes is highly uncertain at regional levels especially for rainfall. To deal with this uncertainty a systematic assessment approach is described here that separates the effects of changed temperatures, rainfall and CO2 concentration on regional and national wheat yields, including the effects of management adaptations in response to the above changes. This allows addressing questions such as ‘Are there beneficial effects of moderate warming?’ ‘If so, at what point does further warming become negative?’ and ‘What is the benefit of management adaptation to climate changes?’ Furthermore, the approach allows recombination of the components in a risk assessment approach to investigate questions such as ‘What level of CO2 increase is required to offset deleterious changes in rainfall and temperature ?’ or ‘What is the probability of reductions in the value of the wheat industry ?’

Climate change effects on wheat yield and water use in oasis cropland
Agriculture of the inland arid region in Xinjiang depends on irrigation, which forms oasis of Northwest China. The production and water use of wheat, a dominant crop there, is significantly affected by undergoing climate variability and change. The objective of this study is to quantify inter-annual variability of wheat yield and water use from 1955 to 2006. The farming systems model APSIM (Agr...
متن کاملImpacts and Adaptation to Climate Change in Western Australian Wheat Cropping Systems
The environment in which crops will be grown in the future will change. Temperatures and CO2 concentrations [CO2] will increase. Also a decline in winter rainfall of up to 30% in 2070 is predicted for south-west Australia. Effects of climate change on cropping systems were simulated with the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM-Nwheat) using transformed historic weather data. Fifty ...
متن کاملVulnerability of eco-environmental health to climate change: the views of government stakeholders and other specialists in Queensland, Australia
BACKGROUND There is overwhelming scientific evidence that human activities have changed and will continue to change the climate of the Earth. Eco-environmental health, which refers to the interdependencies between ecological systems and population health and well-being, is likely to be significantly influenced by climate change. The aim of this study was to examine perceptions from government s...
متن کاملImpact of Climate Change Effects on Contamination of Cereal Grains with Deoxynivalenol
Climate change is expected to aggravate feed and food safety problems of crops; however, quantitative estimates are scarce. This study aimed to estimate impacts of climate change effects on deoxynivalenol contamination of wheat and maize grown in the Netherlands by 2040. Quantitative modelling was applied, considering both direct effects of changing climate on toxin contamination and indirect e...
متن کاملImpacts of climate change and climate variability on the competitiveness of wheat and beef cattle production in Emerald, north-east Australia.
Emerald, north-east Queensland, is at the northern margin of the wheat cropping region of Australia. The Emerald region was previously used predominantly for grazing beef cattle; however, cropping has developed in importance over the past 30 years. We use historical climate records (1890-1998) to simulate and compare wheat yields, grass production and live-weight gain (LWG) over time. The cropp...
